A mystery "haze" detected on board an Air New Zealand plane caused it to be grounded on Tuesday morning.

The flight out of Napier had not taken off when the haze was detected in the cabin.

"Air New Zealand flight NZ5210 from Napier to Auckland was cancelled earlier this morning due to a haze being detected in the cabin. Please note this flight had not taken off at the time," a spokeswoman said.

"Engineers will inspect the aircraft today."

It is not yet known what caused the haze, or if it was a health risk. The Air New Zealand spokeswoman said it was definitely not smoke detected in the cabin.
