Drivers heading north from Auckland this weekend are warned to expect delays as major roadworks get underway on State Highway 16.

The highway will be closed at Huapai in north-west Auckland on Sunday and Monday nights, the NZ Transport Agency said. Traffic will be diverted onto side roads.

Agency regional journey manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult said the detour was 3.6km long. The highway will be closed on both nights from 7pm to 6am.
