The royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge cost the taxpayer more than $1 million.

Figures released by Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) show $1,035,000 of taxpayer money was spent on the visit, the majority on personnel and travel.

Police also spent $61,274 on the visit, mainly on internal travel for its staff.

The Defence Force, which flew Prince William and Kate around New Zealand, was yet to release the cost to it.

The 10-day visit in April was met with strong public support in the eight centres it took in.

In releasing the figures, the DIA said a unique feature of the visit was the worldwide media interest in the couple, with some 120 foreign and 320 domestic media accredited for it.

"The provisional expenditure for the visit of is consistent with the cost of previous royal visits taking into account the duration and itinerary," it said.

It was possible some small costs were yet to be accounted for, it said.

Breakdown of DIA costs:

Personnel: $425,000

International travel: $102,000

Domestic air travel: $81,000

Accommodation, meals and other travel related costs: $132,000

Vehicle hire: $108,000

Government hospitality: $89,000

General operating costs (including security): $98,000
