A forestry worker has been injured after being crushed by a falling tree in the western Bay of Plenty in the latest accident to hit the industry.

The 60-year-old was airlifted from Matakana Island to Tauranga Hospital about 8.15 this morning with a severe lower leg injury, SunLive reported.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was forced to land on the beach and paramedics were driven to the scene by four wheel drive.

Forestry-related accidents claimed 10 lives last year.

Just days ago, a man was killed after being crushed by a log while doing maintenance work at a church property in Wakefield near Nelson.

An Independent Forestry Safety Review panel was established in January to review the high number of serious and fatal injuries in the industry. Since 2008, there have been 28 fatalities across New Zealand.
