Twenty firefighters are still at the scene of a fire that has claimed a Taumarunui marae.

Five fire trucks have been at the scene since 5am.

Central Communications shift manager Jan Wills said one building was destroyed in the early morning blaze.

Mau Phillips, Chairman of the Marae Trustees, said they are absolutely "devastated" by the fire.

"[We are] devastated at the loss of these iconic buildings and are working closely with authorities to determine the cause and to ensure the marae is safe moving forward."

Marae buildings named Pareuira, Whaatua Kai Maarie and the Surgery were completely destroyed.

Until the full investigation is completed the Trustees have closed the Marae to all public.

Trustee's had recently started a major review of building compliance and safety.
