Man charged with assaulting infant
A man has been arrested and charged in relation to a baby that was critically injured in Hamilton this morning.
"At this stage the baby remains in a critical condition and is likely to be transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital later today for more specialist care," said Waikato field crime manager, acting Detective Inspector Mark Greene.
Waikato Police are investigating a domestic incident that occurred in Hamilton East this morning in which the 8-month-old infant suffered critical injuries.
Greene said a 32-year-old man from the address where emergency services found the injured baby just before noon has been arrested and charged with assault on a child. He is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
Greene said the York St address where the baby was found remains under guard and will be the subject of a scene examination by forensic experts tomorrow.
"Currently it is not a case where police are seeking specific answers as to what happened, more it is a case of identifying the questions we seek answers to and until such time as we have identified these it would be inappropriate to speculate further.
"The only thing further we can confirm is that this incident was one of a domestic nature and domestic violence is no respecter of class or station, it affects persons from all walks of life and our message is, there is plenty of help available, you just need to take the first step and ask for help."
