A drunk driver three times over the legal limit was one of five people caught by police in a Bay of Plenty crackdown on drink driving.

Sergeant Mike Owen of the Western Bay of Plenty Road Policing Unit said the five drivers found to be drunk behind the wheel were "five too many".

"Drink driving is never okay but this result is particularly disappointing when you look at the high levels of intoxication these drivers had", Owen said.

A 32-year-old woman had the highest reading for the week with 1228 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath - more than three times the legal limit of 400.

Owen said the result was "absolutely horrendous".

"There is no excuse for this at all."

A 42-year-old woman blew 1031, a 33-year-old man blew 905, a 27-year-old man blew 633, and a 20-year-old man blew 555 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Six drivers were also caught driving while disqualified.

A total of 374 tickets for various offences were issued over the week-long campaign which ran from June 9 to 15.
