Five men have been charged for allegedly illegally hunting pigs in the forest at Willow Flat, near Wairoa on Saturday.
Forest security staff and police seized their hunting equipment, firearms and knives.
The men, aged between 17 and 23 from Taupo, Tokoroa and Hawke's Bay, have been charged with unlawful hunting.
Police are on the lookout for the rising number of poachers targeting northern Hawke's Bay, Wairoa, said senior sergeant Tony Bates.
"Police will be taking a much more proactive approach and we will be out and about more in our forestry areas and other known poaching spots," Bates said.
Police would seize hunting equipment and could seek the forfeiture of vehicles used by poachers.
"Poachers also need to get the message that there is a lot at stake," Bates said.
