Fluoride to return to Hamilton's water
Fluoride will be put back into the city's water network within a week after a bid by Safe Water Alternative New Zealand (SWANZ) failed in the Hamilton High Court.
SWANZ sought an interim court order to prevent the resumption of fluoridation in Hamilton's water supply until their application for judicial review of Council's March decision was heard.
Mayor Julie Hardaker said the court rejected the SWANZ application and council would continue to fluoridate water - a move that was consistent with their decision and a 2013 citizen's initiated referendum.
Council staff will begin adding fluoride back in the supply and would take up to two weeks for fluoride to be distributed throughout the network.
The SWANZ application will be heard in the High Court on September 9 and Council has set aside $50,000 in the 2014-2105 Draft Annual Plan to meet the costs.
