A pool of blood and spectacles found on the Waikato River bank in central Hamilton has sparked a plea for information from police.

They were called to the river bank path below the Ibis Hotel about 9.20am today, Detective Sergeant Dave Grace of the Hamilton CIB said.

"Officers were responding to a call from the public in regards to a pool of red liquid, similar in consistency to blood, that was found on the path between Alma St and the Claudelands Bridge.

"The amount of liquid was not great. It was about the size of an A4 notebook but the discovery and the finding of a pair of spectacles about  five metres away back towards the bridge is sufficient enough to cause us some concerns."

Grace said police were looking at a number of possible scenarios about how the liquid could have got there.

"We'll need to get it tested by ESR to confirm if it is blood but in the interim we will treat it as such.''

Police searched the area on foot today and launched the search and rescue boat for another perspective.

Officers have been speaking to people and businesses in the area checking if anyone saw anything or if anyone is missing.

"It could be something completely innocuous such as someone stumbling and injuring themselves, or that a person could have been attacked and fallen into the river, so we're keeping an open mind.

"As we work to establish the circumstances of the find we want to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area, or who may have suffered an injury or, anyone who may know someone who is missing and remains unaccounted for."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Grace at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with the independent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
