An Otorohanga rugby player can't play any more games for his club this season after being banned from entering the town by a Hamilton judge.

Ted Tutpoar Tauroa, 30 - who was listed as coming off the bench for his club in today's home semifinal against Hamilton Old Boys - was yesterday given a bail condition that meant he can only enter Otorohanga for work purposes and in the company of another employee of Richmond Water Services.

In the Hamilton District Court yesterday, Tauroa was convicted on four charges, including two fresh charges of assaulting a female and breaching a protection order stemming from an incident in Otorohanga on July 13. He was also convicted on another charge of breaching a protection order and failing to answer district court bail on July 8.

Tauroa's club team, top-of-the-table Otorohanga, has a must-win home semifinal against fourth-placed Hamilton Old Boys today. Tauroa first appeared in court on the new charges on Tuesday.

The assault charge involved Tauroa grabbing the victim around the face with one hand and then two hands, resulting in a bleeding nose. Tauroa's lawyer, David Allan, said his client accepted that would have hurt the victim.

Judge Merelina Burnett allowed the work condition, but said allowing him to play rugby wasn't important given the gravity of the charges and his criminal history. "I just don't think it's important for the purpose of his reason for being in court. He has a number of convictions for assault, six, and one for assaulting a female."

The judge bailed Tauroa to reappear for sentencing in September.
