Two 14-year-old boys drove from Hamilton to Huntly today as they fled police in a stolen car.
Police said the boys had attempted to break into a car at a Hamilton shopping centre shortly after 2pm.
They left Hamilton in a Subaru Forester which had been stolen from Auckland's North Shore yesterday.
Police located it nearby a short time later. The driver fled from police but, due to his driving behaviour, the pursuit was abandoned shortly after it began.
The vehicle was sighted heading north several times. It stopped in Huntly, where the two occupants fled on foot.
A police dog was used to track the boys, who eventually ran into the path of other police staff.
The pair are being dealt with in relation to their offending.
Waikato police are working with partner agencies in relation to their care and protection.
"It was pleasing to see that police actions and policy in relation to fleeing drivers have brought this incident to a safe conclusion with no injuries or damage caused," Senior Sergeant Gillian Meadows, of Huntly, said.
