A head-on crash on the Kaimai Range this afternoon has claimed the life of a teenage girl.

State Highway 29 was closed to traffic while emergency services dealt with the two-car crash, which happened about 4pm today near the summit on the Waikato side of the range.

A 16-year-old girl who died was the front seat passenger in the car travelling up the hill from the Hamilton side.

"The driver of that vehicle and the sole occupant of the second car were not reported to have been seriously injured,'' Police spokesman Inspector Ian Brooker said.

Serious crash investigators had been called.

A traffic diversion was in place for about five hours, longer than expected "due to the way the vehicles were positioned'', Brooker said.

Brooker said the girl's next-of-kin had been advised but her name would not be released until wider family were notified.
