A 52-year-old woman is dead after falling from a central Tauranga office block today.

She died of injuries sustained in the four-storey fall, reported to police at 10.55am, Senior Sergeant Shannon Clifford, of the Tauranga police, told the SunLive news website.

Her name will be withheld until next of kin have been advised.

She was taken to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition, but did not survive her injuries.

Detectives were interviewing witnesses in First Ave.

A witness working opposite the building - occupied by a law firm - told the website she had seen her friend rush across to the Second Ave medical centre.

About 15 minutes later two St John ambulances arrived and began treating a woman on the ground.

The woman was wearing grey track pants and a pair of sneakers.

Police were seen looking through a pale blue backpack on the driveway behind the law firm.

The $13.5 million building on the corner of Devonport Rd and First Ave opened in May 2012.
