Tauranga police are hunting an armed robber who stole cash from a butcher at knifepoint.
An employee at The Aussie Butcher in Gate Pa shopping centre was opening up alone this morning when he was attacked by a man holding a butcher's knife with a 20cm blade and told to hand over cash from the tills and safe.
Police said the employee was installing the tills and uncovering meat at the front of the shop when a man entered through an insecure back door, took a knife from the premises and threatened to stab him.
"The male was making stabbing motions with the knife at the employee's neck, who gave the male the till and opened the safe for the offender," said senior sergeant Carl Purcell.
He said the thief escaped through the back door, with the cash and the knife, just before 7am.
The employee was not physically hurt but was "justifiably shaken by the events", he added.
The offender is described as a thin Maori man, in his late 20s, and about 5 foot 8 inches tall. He was wearing a dark jacket or hoodie, a black beanie and had a red scarf pulled across the bottom of his face.
