It will be the calm before the storm today as fine weather dominates the country ahead of a heavy rain later in the week.

Cloudy periods or fine spells are the order of the day for most of the country as a high pressure stretches across the country.

Temperatures will make a mad dash up the thermometer, with Auckland expected to top 16 degrees Celsius, while Hamilton, Tauranga and Christchurch will all reach 15C.

There may be patchy drizzle in Westland and Stewart Island.

However, the brief respite from the wet weather will end for many by tomorrow evening.

A wet low pressure will engulf northern and western parts of the North Island and parts of the South Island by tomorrow evening.

Heavy rain is predicted for Auckland, Northland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Nelson from tomorrow afternoon and into Wednesday.

Temperatures will remain on the warm side, with 19C predicted for Whangarei on Wednesday, while Auckland and Tauranga will top 18C.

The rain will continue to roll down the country later in the week, reaching Wellington and Christchurch before the end of the week.

The mercury will also take a dive by Friday, with few places lucky to reach 13C.
