Armed police have today arrested a man allegedly responsible for making threats to the Hamilton East Work and Income office overnight.

The 42-year-old was arrested at a property in Firth Street, Hamilton East, just after 2pm.

AInspector Marcus Lynam said the man was being interviewed by police.

"At this time police would like to reassure the public that we are taking all such threats seriously and would like to remind people that they cannot and should not think they can threaten others without consequence."

The arrest is the latest in a string of threats on Work and Income offices around the country following Monday's fatal shooting which left two staff dead and another seriously wounded in Ashburton.

Waikato Police say behaviour threatening workers doing their jobs will not be tolerated.
