YMCA up for sale
Hamilton's YMCA site will be offered for sale following a flurry of city council decisions today affecting indoor recreation facilities.
City councillors considering long term budgets have voted 7-6 to offer the site to prospective buyers who will continue to use it for recreation and related activities.
Staff estimate the site's three separate titles could together attract up to $3 million and have signalled two parties already expressing interest.
In another major decision councillors vetoed a bid to divert up to $2 million from the YMCA sale towards a proposed indoor recreation facility at Wintec's Avalon Dr campus.
Wintec had put up a staged, scaled-back proposal also requiring council contributions towards operating costs and depreciation.
A third significant decision saw councillors leave $550,000 in draft budgets to remediate severe condensation problems at the Te Rapa Sportsdrome.
