A jury in the High Court at Hamilton has found William Thompson, 63, guilty of manslaughter.
Thompson denied a charge of manslaughter and an alternative charge of dangerous driving causing death of Warren Deane, 41, on October 6, last year.
The jury returned their verdict about 4pm after a four hour deliberation. The trial began on Monday.
Waikato University student Warren Deane confronted Thompson over dumping a bag of rubbish at a park opposite the Brookfield Accommodation Centre where he lived and worked.
Deane ended up on Thompson's bonnet with the pair travelling 440m until Deane fell off and suffering a critical head injury.
Thompson will be sentenced in September.
