Waikato man killed in Pokeno crash

A man killed in a car accident near Pokeno last night is understood to be from the Waikato.

The man - believed to be middle aged -  died when he crashed his car into the back of a truck on the Bombay Hills on State Highway 1.

Emergency services descended on the scene, 200m north of the Pokeno turn off, just after 8pm.

The man's car had crashed into the rear of the truck which was in the middle of the three northbound lanes.

The road was closed and traffic diverted for several hours as the police serious crash unit investigated and the scene was cleared.

Police are contacting the man's next of kin. He is understood to be from the Waikato.
