Minimum fine for 200kmh driver
An 18-year-old clocked doing 194km/h has escaped with a minimum fine and disqualification.
Zhivargo Edward Blake Williams was driving on State Highway 1 at Whangamarino - near Te Kauwhata on August 22 about 11.50pm when he was snapped by a police radar travelling at 194kmh.
Williams also had a passenger in his Holden Commodore.
Community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle convicted Williams on a charge of driving at a dangerous speed, fined him $500 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
However, the police prosecutor noted the minimum fine for the offence is $630 and was usually given for travelling just 50km/h over the limit.
Williams was travelling 94kmh over the limit.
Mrs Mascelle then raised her fine to $630.
