Two people have escaped unharmed after their gyrocopter crashed into Tauranga Harbour this afternoon.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said while emergency services made their way to the scene he believed the two passengers were making their own way back to shore.
''It appears as if they have crashed off the end of the runway,'' Mr Phillips said.
The incident happened about 1.10pm.
Inspector Ian Brooker from Northern Police Communications said police were also at the scene of the crash where officers had confirmed the passengers, both believed to be in their 60s, were seen standing in the water.
One of the men has been taken to hospital as a precaution but niether are understood to have been seriously injured.
Mr Brooker was unsure whether the Civil Aviation Authority would be investigating the incident.
