Cyclist hit by car
A woman suffered serious injuries when she was knocked off her bike by a car in Whangamata yesterday.
The ''very fit'' 69-year-old was cycling along Port Rd shortly before 11am when a car, which was turning right into a carpark, crashed into her.
Whangamata police senior constable Craig Donaldson said a truck was passing the cyclist just before the accident, and it was likely the driver of the car didn't see her until the last minute.
''It was pretty much an accident, it's just one of those things. The lady that hit her was really upset.''
The woman is an avid cyclist and was riding her road bike and wearing a helmet.
''She cycles all the time. She's really fit. It would have helped her a lot,'' Mr Donaldson said.
Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew the woman to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
''She was conscious through the whole thing, but obviously in a bit of pain.''
Mr Donaldson said police enquiries were ongoing to determine whether any charges would be laid against the driver of the car.
