Alleged wheelchair sex attacker in court
A man who allegedly indecently assaulted a disabled woman as she rolled through a Hamilton street in her wheelchair has been remanded in custody.
Hamilton police made the arrest after getting leads from a public appeal for information on Monday.
The victime has suffered from spina bifida since childhood and was travelling in her wheelchair, along her usual Mardon Rd route on January 14, to visit family when she was confronted by a man she did not know.
He then allegedly grabbed her and indecently assaulting her in broad daylight.
Ioane Sili appeared in the Hamiton District Court yesterday charged with indecent assault.
Sili, of Samoan descent, required an interpreter for his appearance.
A request for bail was opposed by police and declined by Community Magistrate Kathryn Wilson.
He was remanded in custody to reappear for a bail hearing on Friday.
