A farmer suffered serious chest and back injuries this morning when the quad bike he was driving rolled 20 metres down a steep slope.

The incident unfolded on a farm off Arapuni Rd between Parawera and Arapuni at about 9.30am.

Police and ambulance staff were first at the scene but the man had to be airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance.

The 36-year-old man Te Awamutu resident lost control of his quad bike and toppled about 20m down a grassed hill.

He sustained injuries but St John has yet to confirm how severe they were.

The patient is being assessed in emergency department.
