Meat cleaver attacker pleads guilty

A Ngaruawahia man has admitted attacking three men with a meat cleaver, leaving them with serious injuries.

Warren Lloyd Edwards admitted three charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm the in Hamilton District Court this morning. 

Police, at the time, described the attack as "violent and malicious".

Edwards attacked the three men as they were drinking in a grassed area behind a fence in between two buildings in the town.

One man received critical neck and body injuries, while one remained in hospital for a short stay while the third was discharged the next day.

Edwards was arrested a short time later and found in possession of the meat cleaver.

Edwards' lawyer Jarom Keung said his client was also keen to part take in a restorative justice conference with the victims, who knew him before the attack.

Community magistrate Susan Howell remanded Edwards on further bail to reappear for sentencing on April 4. She also ordered pre-sentence and psychologist's reports.

Edwards' wife, children and other family members were in court to support him for his appearance.
