Collision spurs road review

A review has been launched to determine whether the layout of a key interchange on the Te Rapa section of the Waikato Expressway contributed to a two-car crash.

The crash happened at the off-ramp from Mangaharakeke Dr to Koura Dr on February 4.

Two women in a Ford Laser and a man in a Nissan four wheel drive vehicle were treated at the scene by emergency services.

The Nissan was left overturned by the collision, while the Ford was badly damaged.

NZ Transport Agency's Waikato Expressway principle project manager Richard Young said the incident was the only recorded crash at the Koura Dr interchange since it opened last September.

''The NZTA specifies intersection designs to meet current standards and best practice. A review of the crash is being undertaken to see if the intersection contributed to the crash. If improvements are identified and warranted, these will be implemented,'' Mr Young said.

He said the interchange was subject to independent safety reviews at a design stage and post construction.

No issues were identified with the intersection.

Mr Young  said there was another unreported incident at the Koura Dr interchange where a vehicle failed to stop or give way.

''The NZTA is aware of this crash due to the extensive skid marks on the road and onto the median island, the give way sign was also knocked down. This crash is clearly attributable to excessive speed.''
