North Hamilton commuters face big delays this morning following the partial closure of the Wairere Dr/Hukanui Road roundabout.

Roading contractors have been working hard to restore the intersection which was extensively damaged yesterday due to a burst water main.

Underpasses have also been affected with large amount of mud pooling seen pooling in the accessways.

The roundabout could be partly closed for up to four days following yesterday's water damage that left gaping potholes up to half a metre deep on the north side of the cracked roundabout where water had flushed away the foundations of the road.

Officer in charge of the Hamilton City strategic traffic unit Sergeant Phil Ruddell said roads were closed almost immediately after the incident which occurred at about 1.50pm yesterday.

"Police were here at the time and saw the road moving in front of them. They immediately put road closures in place," he said.

Huntington resident Nichola McAllister went to investigate after hearing the pipe burst and said the scene was "incredible".

"I live in Huntington and I heard a big bang," she said.  "I thought my animals had knocked something down. It was a big 'thwack' sort of sound."

Traffic continues to move slowly through the south side of the roundabout this morning.

Detours are available along Gordonton Rd or Resolution Dr but people are asked to avoid the area if possible.
