A 14-month-old baby had a miraculous escape when it survived a five-metre fall from a second-storey bedroom window.
Police were called to Meadowbank Crescent house in Rotorua this morning when the baby girl was reported to have fallen from the window on to the ground below.
It is understood the baby climbed up to the window ledge, lost her balance and fell five metres.
She suffered minor injuries and was admitted to Rotorua Hospital, where she was in a stable condition, a police spokeswoman said.
Neighbours said they were woken by a lot of crying and screaming around 7am this morning.
An ambulance arrived soon after, a neighbour said.
"Everybody is shaken up by it," he said.
"I just glad the baby is safe and alive.
"What the heck was a baby doing on a window two storeys up in the first place, is what I would want to know?"
Police were interviewing the house's residents, which included four adults and two children.
