Police are warning of "dodgy painters" knocking on the doors of Hawke's Bay and Waikato residents offering their services.

Police said today people should be wary of a group of European men trying to rip people off.

Three men approached a Hastings woman yesterday offering to paint her roof, Inspector Hirone Waretini said.

She spotted the men watering down the paint before they claimed to have finished the job after just two hours of work.

The men demanded payment but fled when the woman asked about one man's identity and threatened to call Immigration.

Waikato Police are looking for the same men after reports of similar activity in their district.

The middle-aged men are thought to be from the United Kingdom or Ireland and have been seen in a black Volvo Saloon, registration GQA1.

Mr Waretini advised people to turn the men away at the front gate and call police. If the men were intimidating, they should ring police immediately, he said.

Mr Waretini said people should use reputable companies and not accept work from tradesmen knocking on their door.

"Their presence is not welcome in Hawke's Bay, except perhaps at the local Police stations."
