'Double Trouble' hit the road for kids

When two former Pukekohe women decided to race to Queenstown on $10 to raise money for Cure Kids, it was a no-brainer on where to focus their fundraising efforts.
Melissa van den Brekel, 24, is now living in Huntly, and Veronica Wrigley, 23, in Penrose, but they thought it was the town they grew up in that would show them the most support.
Melissa and Veronica have entered October's Cure Kids Accor $10 Queenstown race, but first need to raise $7000 to take part.
The race involves teams of two finding any way possible to get from Auckland to Queenstown in three days, undertaking challenges along the way, with only $10 to their name.
They have reached their first $1000 target, but need to raise another $3000 by July 25, and another $3000 by September 12.
They are planning a charity auction, and are looking for support from businesses, in the form of donated goods and services.
Melissa and Veronica went to St Joseph's and Pukekohe High School together, where the mischievous behaviour that inspired their team name, Double Trouble, took place.
"We've been together through thick and thin since then, and thought it's about time to give back for all the trouble we caused," says Veronica.
When Melissa heard about the race, it touched a nerve with her as the mother of a five-year-old son herself, and she convinced Veronica to come on board.
If you can help, contact Veronica on 021 101-6176 or vwrigley@xtra.co.nz.
Donated goods can be dropped off at MW Insurance in Pukekohe. Cure Kids was established to address the lack of research into life-threatening childhood illnesses.
