Possums on the Awhitu Peninsula are on notice. A new Possum Control Area has been approved by Auckland Regional Council to keep the pest numbers down and improve biodiversity.
ARC says the Awhitu community asked the council to set up a Possum Control Area on the peninsula to ensure possum numbers stayed under control after external funding for current schemes ceased.
The regular ARC possum programme at Awhitu had been boosted by the efforts of the Awhitu Peninsula Landcare Group which had received Department of Conservation three-year funding for possum control.
The group employed a pest control supervisor who co-ordinated local efforts and ARC monitoring indicated very low possum numbers there.
