Awhitu Peninsula's Big Bay Motorcamp has just received its first Qualmark rating of two-and-a-half stars.
``We're the first business on the peninsula to get Qualmark rated,'' said proprietor Ian Parry. Four-and-a-half years ago when Ian and his wife Helen bought the motorcamp at a deceased estate auction, it was in disrepair.
``All the drains when we first bought it were blocked, the whole infrastructure of the camp was at rock-bottom,'' said Ian.
After a make-over, which included upgrading the toilet block, Ian and Helen's ongoing efforts to upgrade the motorcamp paid off when they received the Qualmark rating.
``It's all about business practices, it's about how you're running you're business and presenting your business,'' said Ian.
The ongoing upgrade includes the recent provision of an outdoor pizza oven and work has now begun on a takeaway bar.
``We know there's still a lot of work to be done, but we're always doing things, we're very open minded if someone doesn't like something, please tell us and we'll fix it,'' said Ian.
Now listed in the AA directory, Ian said he is now getting international tourists and recently had a group of Brazilians.
``A lot of them don't speak English, so you play charades,'' he said.
