Fairfax cuts jobs again

Fairfax Media is cutting another 70 jobs in New Zealand, but the group is still "absolutely committed" to preserving jobs in the current economic climate, according to chief executive Joan Withers. Fairfax cut 160 jobs last year.
The Australian-based publisher, which owns more than 80 newspapers and 25 magazines in New Zealand, including the Waikato Times, surprised staff yesterday by revealing further cuts.
Ms Withers said they would streamline pre-press and advertising production into four regional hubs in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch and reduce headcount by a third.
However, with the Waikato region centralising this work over the past six months, and 14 jobs already having been lost through that process, it was unlikely there would be more losses here, general manager Gerard Watt said this morning.
