Blockbuster mainstream movies are returning to Hamilton city with Hoyts Cinemas taking a 15 year lease over Centre Place's multi-screen movie complex.

Centre Place owner Kiwi Income Property Trust said the return of mainstream multiplex cinema was an important element in the competitive repositioning of the CBD retail centre.

Previous cinema company tenant Event Cinemas pulled out of Centre Place in February citing building restrictions as the reason it was not renewing its lease.

Kiwi Income Property Trust said the cinema complex would be extensively modernised and refurbished at a cost of $7.1 million.

It would open in the fourth quarter of next year along with the new 7000 Farmers department store in Centre Place.

Event Cinemas employed 26 staff, mostly part time.
