4G gets Waikato up to speed

Vodafone begins offering its 4G network to pre-paid customers throughout the Waikato region today.

Vodafone's network manager for speed and coverage, Deahnn Tinsley, who is based in Hamilton, said 4G would allow mobile devices to work up to 10 times faster than standard 3G network.

Vodafone's 4G is included in all current On Account and BYO smartphone plans, and is available to pre-paid customers on the company's 4G Prepay $19 plan from today. People can access the new network if they had a 4G-capable device, the latest software and in a 4G coverage area.

Ms Tinsley said 4G was now live at Waikato Stadium, Mystery Creek Events Centre, the Base Shopping Centre and parts of Hamilton City.

By Christmas, coverage will extend to about one-third of Hamilton's population and two-thirds by March, 2014. It was expected 4G would be available throughout the city centre, around Hamilton Lake, and parts of Flagstaff, Chartwell, Queenwood, Fairfield, Ruakura, Te Rapa, Claudelands, Frankton, Waikato University and WINTEC.

To celebrate the launch, Vodafone and the Waikato Times are giving you the chance to win a 4G-capable Samsung GALAXY S4 Active - worth $949.
