Job cuts at Genesis Energy's Hamilton call centre
Genesis Energy will probably cut an unconfirmed number of jobs from its Hamilton Customer Service Centre.
Public affairs manager Richard Gordon said the company had put a proposal to affected staff on Tuesday last week, and was currently in a consultation period with them before making any final decisions.
He said the proposal had been on the table for a few months, and was part of
"an on-going business improvement programme."
"We are making some changes that are proposed, to the management structure in our customer service centre in Hamilton," he said.
"It does not impact our frontline service directly, we're not making any changes to that part of the business."
Gordon said no frontline staff would be affected. He also said the proposal had nothing to do with the possible partial privatisation of the company later this year.
"It's not about reducing head count at all, it's about making our business more efficient," said Gordon.
Genesis Energy is the last of the power companies up for partial privitisation, after 49 per cent of Meridian Energy and Mighty River Power were sold off last year.
Contact Energy was fully sold off in 1999.
Genesis Energy last week announced it had cut its coal supply contracts from Indonesia to its Huntly Power Station, and would renegotiate its coal cupply agreement with Solid Energy.
The changes come on the back of a decision last year to fast-track the closure of two of the power station's old coal units. Four will remain open, two of them older 250 megawatt dual-fuel units and two modern gas turbines (400MW and 48MW).
Gordon said that around 22 employees left the station as a result of the changes toward the end of last year.
"Things are still developing there. We are moving about 100 people from Huntly Power Station to Hamilton in the next few months."
Genesis Energy currently employs between 360 people at its Hamilton customer services centre.
