DVD review: Monsters vs Aliens

FUNNY STUFF: Monsters vs Aliens is child-friendly viewing.

A giant blue blob, a bug-eyed doctor, a tall neurotic blonde chick, a reptile and an overblown bug. They're about as unlikely a team of crack enforcers as any that you'll ever come across.

But they're highly watchable, downright funny and the stars of new animated film Monsters vs Aliens, the latest creation from Dreamworks - the guys who created Shrek and Madagascar.

Monsters vs Aliens isn't quite up to the standards set by those classics, let down by a predictable plot involving a  an alien invasion being thwarted by a random collection of "monsters" let on the loose.

But there is plenty to enjoy here, from the excellently goofy president voiced by talk show host Stephen Colbert, to the dazed expression constantly on Insectosaurus' face.

But a giant blue blob called - you guessed it - Bob steals the show. Voiced by comedian Seth Rogan, it's no wonder this DVD package comes with a second disc containing a separate 3D movie based on the character.

Extras: Commentary, deleted scenes, trailer and a karaoke game in which you - or your kids - can sing along with  all your favourite monsters.

I watched this on a flight from Auckland to Heathrow, along with about seven other films. It's light, it's funny. Much like the poster on the wall of Murray's office in Flight of the Concords about New Zealand: "Don't expect too much - you'll love it"

My favourite part of tis movie was all of the old school B movie references, such as The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Blob, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and my all time favourtie, The Fly. Definitely an awesome movie, I highly recommend it :)

I loved MvsA when I saw it in the cinema. Both my friend and I were in love with the giant bug, we both sat there and went "awwwww" every time. Awww. I def want to buy this DVD.
