COOKING UP A STORM: Nigel Anderson is one of the final 12 contestants on Masterchef New Zealand.

Taupo restaurant manager Nigel Anderson is the latest casualty of Masterchef New Zealand.

Last night the final eight contestants were given the task of preparing canapés at Auckland hotel, The Langham, for 120 VIPs and celebrities.

The diners then decided on the winning team.

Nigel says he was "a little disappointed" about going from the high of winning last week's pastry challenge to being eliminated last night.

His reward for winning the pastry challenge was to become the leader of the Red team but it was a responsibility Nigel says he found difficult.

"You really feel the pressure so much more because you're responsible for your whole team and their success or failure is reflected directly on you."

He strategically chose youngster Karyn Fisk as the opposition leader but it was a move that backfired.

"Karyn was a much stronger team leader than I had anticipated," Nigel says.

The blue team got 74 votes, more than double the Red team's 34.

At elimination Anderson along with Rob Trathen, Brett McGregor, and Sue Drummond all took responsibility and offered themselves up as sacrificial lambs.

Anderson and Trathen were put before the judges.

The judges said Anderson was meant to be in charge, but when it came to leading the team, he lost his nerve.

They said they noticed McGregor having to fight the urge to take over the team to get things done.

Jusge Ray McVinnie said it wasn't a great day for any of the team members.

Nigel says it was difficult producing food designed by another chef.

"A lot of it came down to people's personal preference and the food that they enjoyed; we had a couple of minor issues on my team with seasoning."

"There's no question, as a leader, you do have to say I take responsibility for my team's performance."

Anderson says that the show helped him grow his confidence.

"I certainly learnt a few things along the way, not only cooking, the TV side of things as well."

Anderson has been restaurant manager at the Suncourt Hotel in Taupo for years and says he'd like to make the transition from front of house to behind the scenes in the kitchen.

He says his impression of the judges changed over the course of filming.

"At the beginning they were quite intimidating but as I got to know them their personalities came out."

"I don't think they could have picked three better judges to be honest."

Is it just me or are these reality cooking shows just getting out of control? ive watched a couple and find them really painfully boring to watch.. what is all the hype about?

I think it is unfair the way they are treating the "leaders" in the group competition. Last night it should have been Sue to be the one to go. The week before it should have been Karyn, in fact Karyn should have gone the night she drank the beer. On the plus side, TV3 now gets my choice of viewing as I can't be bothered watching a programme where the Judges have already made up their mind over who is going to win the programme (Sue). Bring back Fair Go!!

No I do not agree with the final result, just because he had one bad night does not mean he should go!! He was one of the stronger cooks on the show, and there was 1 other contestent that should of gone instead of him!! Give you a clue it was not a man.

I think the Masterchef judging has been ridiculous to date. The fact that the chef's have been placed into high pressure cooking arena's without having first been able to assert their individual skills is ludicrous. Did the producers not watch Masterchef Australia? I am disappointed that two people have been voted off who were REAL contenders to win the show because they didn't succeed when thrown in the proverbial deep end! Is it a cooking show? Let the guys cook as individuals then train the winner to work in that high pressure environment - wake up Masterchef!

no I think there was another member in the red team who deserved to be sent hime more. If i remember rightly last week the pies she made were not great

Mr anderson after all made a wonderful job of his pies last week. I think he is a fantastic cook

Nigel's elimination just highlights why I don't really value the results of these shows much anymore. The modified version of Masterchef shown in NZ or Aus puts too much focus on gimmick events, which leads to situations like this where some of the best cooks have been forced to leave the competition and leave weaker cooks behind because of the roll of the dice. I could tell who would win this challenge the second they unveiled the ingredients - did they really expect the attendees to pick Fish and Chips over Scallops?

I agree with the elimination but I was gutted that Karyn did not get the night at the Langham reward, she was awesome as team leader and surprised everyone. The team won because of her effort, the judges erred in not giving her the treat, and the Langham was mean they didnt give all the blue team a night stay of luxury.

That's twice that this RIDICULOUS programme has kicked someone out of the MasterChef kitchen for being the best in one of their competitive cookoffs. How can someone who creates the best dishes of the group one week, not have the COOKING ability to win the competition the following week? OK, so Nigel found managing the team and creating the canapes a stretch last night...does that mean the man can't cook? This programme has become such a joke in how they are judging the contestants it's just laughable to watch each week now! Careful guys, if you cook too well you too may have to lead a team the following week and then be kicked off the show!

It was a bad call from the judges. How can you eliminate Nigel when he blitzed everyone else last week and won? Nigel has consistently been one of the strongest contenders to date and has aptly demonstrated his skills and teamwork abilities. The judges need to focus on eliminating the talentless and pretentious over someone whose only fault was being a little mild-mannered. Bad Call!!

No, completely disagree. He wasn't the reason for the failure, and certainly a biased result. The captain down with the ship, but he didnt choose to be in that position. His reward was a 50% chance of failing in the next episode. Also if that is true, why didn't the opposing captain win the reward. She was visibly disappointed that she didn't win that reward, and she should have. If the captain loses his 'life' for coming last, the other captain should have been rewarded. Also he was eliminated for bad tactics - that's the premise of Survivor not Masterchef.
