Sir Paul McCartney has revealed that he will "jam" with the surviving members of Nirvana.

The Beatles musician is preparing to perform at the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City today.

McCartney, former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who is now a member of the Foo Fighters, and bassist Krist Novoselic, will grace the stage together.

This will be the first time Grohl and Novoselic, have played together in almost 20 years following the death of Kurt Cobain.

McCartney is elated about the historic event.

"[I phoned Dave and he invited me to come over and] jam with some mates," McCartney told British newspaper The Sun.

"I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time?

"And somebody whispered to me 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it."

McCartney, Grohl and  Novoselic will be sharing the stage with Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Kanye West and The Rolling Stones.

The sold-out "12-12-12" concert is being shown on 37 television stations in the United States and more than 200 others worldwide.

It will be streamed on 30 websites, including on YouTube and Yahoo, and played on radio stations. Theaters, including 27 in the New York region and dozens more elsewhere, will also show it live. More than two billion people are expected to have access to the performance.

Proceeds from the show will be distributed through the Robin Hood Foundation.

The late October storm left parts of New York City underwater and millions of people in several states without heat or electricity for weeks. Sandy is blamed for at least 125 deaths, including 104 in New York and New Jersey, and destroyed or damaged 305,000 housing units in New York alone.
