British dance-rock act Bloc Party is returning to New Zealand for one show next month.

The four funky post-punk revolutionaries, with a depth and energy seldom seen in modern rock, are bringing their show to the Powerstation on March 7.

Many will still remember their sold-out 2007 show as one of the best they've ever been to.

Inspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Gang of Four, and the Cure the quartet comprising Kele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes, Matthew Tong, created their very own sound. The melding of thrilling rock with electronica, processed beats and artful noise from several albums ago was a pre-cursor to how music is turning out today. 

Frontman Okereke landed Bloc Party their big break after he seized the moment at a Franz Ferdinand concert and threw a demo CD on stage and into the hands of lead singer Alex Kapranos and London radio heavyweight Steve Lamacq.  

Bloc Party's first album, Silent Alarm, released in 2005 was soon named NME album of the year and the most recent, last year's Four, sold over two million copies.

The band's next show in London is Earls Court, with a capacity 19,000 but two weeks later they'll play at Auckland's Powerstation.

"Bloc Party are to be believed in because they are a band for the whites, the blacks, the straights, the hip-hop kids, the freaks, the geeks, the emo kids, the punk-funkers, the queers and, yes, the fashionistas," the mighty NME wrote about the band.
