Farmers market rates Hamilton honey
Hamilton honey came highly commended at this year's Farmers Markets Awards in Feilding.
The awards celebrated the "real heroes and champions" of regional food production with high-profile chefs Julie Biuso and Hestor Guy getting to sample the best of what New Zealand farmers' markets had on offer.
Natures Country Honey sell their liquid gold at the Hamilton farmers' market on River Rd and received adulation as a highly commended product from the kitchen bench.
On their website Nature's Country Honey say they produce a range of pure honeys unique to New Zealand and make sure their manuka honey, rewarewa or wild flora honey are of the highest calibre.
Guy said there was a real push to keep food in its natural state and keeping the integrity of the ingredients rather than rely on preservatives.
"The raw product is the hero and the quality and flavour of these products is paramount," Guy said.
Farmers Market New Zealand chairman Chris Fortune said the quality of food at farmers' Markets was top notch.
"The attention to quality and freshness is what makes the difference and you can find that in bucket loads at Farmers' Markets nationwide on a weekly basis."
A Carterton man took out the supreme award for the country's top pieman, but bakers across the Waikato region also stepped up to the mark with several medals and a bunch of placings.
Lam Ho from Taupo won a swag of awards including gold in the steak and cheese section, while Vitith Prak Sorm from Matamata came highly commended and Nara Heng from Huntly made the top 10.
In the 2014 Bakels Pie Awards Dinsdale baker Soem Piseth made the top 10 in the mince and gravy category.
Tim Theobald from the Quality Inn Bakery in Matamata made the top 10 for the coveted mince and cheese section, Taupo's Lam Ho from Paetiki Bakery took a second gold in the seafood pie section and Kihikihi's Shane Kearns from Viands Bakery made the top 10.
Silver in the Cafe Boutique went to Andrew Fitzpatrick at Cake Box in Frankton, Lam Ho also won silver in the gourmet meat pie and made the top 10 for the vegetarian pie and chicken and veg.
Coromandel's Treang Mak won silver for the chicken and veg and John Newall from Hamilton's Oxford Pies took silver in the commercial sector, while Kihikihi's Shane Kearns won a second top 10 placing for his gourmet fruit pie.
