Photographer Irene Streten used the inaugural Parachute Music Festival craft fair, today, to launch an art competition.

From her stall, behind Mainstage, the Aucklander encouraged festival goers to enter their work in the competition which was intended to share the Christian message of Jesus’s life, death and resurrection.

Ms Streten, who was selling a handmade book containing her iPhone photographs of nature accompanied by Biblical verses, said the Christian Church had become over reliant on preaching and moved away from using art to convey Christianity.

“I just think it’s about time for art to have a place back out there,” Ms Streten said.

“The Catholic Church has a lot of art. Protestant churches really don’t.”

Further details of the competition, being sponsored by the Takapuna based Arjay Trust, will be announced on its website in July after details are finalised.
