Domain Road Pinot Noir 2009, $35

I am enjoying some old fashioned hearty comfort food with a warming glass of pinot noir, while outside the rain continues to remind me that this is winter in Waikato.

The Central Otago Pinot Noir by the Domain Road Vineyard is produced in an area that enjoys a fabulous microclimate (sigh), ideally suited to producing fine wines.

This is a big, rich, smooth pinot, full of the intense plum and cherry flavours its dark crimson colour promises.

There is a hint of spice and, most pleasingly for me, no hostile tannins to kick in cruelly at the end of the palate, and I am a fan of mild, friendly tannins.

So this pinot definitely has my thumbs-up.

Its price point suggests that perhaps it's more suited for a special occasion than just warming away the winter blues, but oh well, too late now.
