The heat is on for two Waikato restaurants today as top chefs from around the country compete in the final cook off to determine the winner of the Monteiths Beer and Wild Food Challenge.

Hamilton restaurant Victoria Street Bistro was the public’s pick in the competition and was granted a wild card entry into the finals after winning the People’s Choice award. Victoria Street Bistro co-owner Jules Clarke said there is a fantastic atmosphere at the event in Auckland as the chef’s prepare to impress the judges.

As for the competition she says it is "too hard to tell’’ who is going to take out the competition.

"Everyone in the finals is here for a really good reason.’’

And even if they do not come away with the winning title, and the $15,000 prize money, Clarke says it is exciting enough just to be involved in the finals.

‘‘No matter what happens we are extremely excited to be here.’’

The competition begins at 12pm, where the chefs will be given one hour to serve up their wild dishes.

The winners will be announced later today.
