The sleeping giant of Mt Tongariro stirred a little this week and reminded us all just who really is in charge of Aotearoa (hint: not humans).
But volcanic eruptions and all sorts of other geothermal activity have been going on in Taupo for thousands of years.
Here’s a photo of pulled from the ‘volcano’ file in our newsroom archives.
The caption simply read: "Taupo eruption, 20/6/81’’.
A quick google search hasn’t given us any more details and we would welcome any thoughts or suggestions on exactly what we are looking at here.
