Urban sprawl has been in the news this week, with Waikato University professor of environmental planning Bob Evans saying sprawl was gobbling up some of the world's best farmland and killing Hamilton's heart.
Clearly, from this undated photo from the archives, they weren't listening to him back in the day.
Grandview Mall wasn't in existence yet and that opened in 1986 so this was likely taken in the early 80s. The photo is looking west along Grandview Rd with Nawton Primary in the foreground and some of that prime farmland in the background. It's now covered in houses and given fancy names such as Grandview Heights, illustrating Evans' point perfectly.
