This week police union boss Greg O'Connor reckoned gangs were infiltrating the police by joining up and a budget freeze on the force will mean fewer gang members are weeded out at the recruitment stage.

We're fairly confident none of these Mobsters joined the thin blue line but you never know.

Anyway, here they are doing their civic duty by handing in weapons to police during an arms amnesty back in 1979.

Weapons included home-made pistols, lead pipes, maces, spears and axe handles wrapped in barbed wire.

Hamilton Mongrel Mob sergeant-at-arms 'Vini' said they were handing them in "before we get busted".

"Hopefully it's a turn for the better," police senior sergeant Ian Paterson said.
