Matamata policeman assaulted outside bar
A Matamata policeman was seriously assaulted over the weekend as he was arresting a drunken man outside a bar.
Sergeant Graham McGurk said two officers were on patrol outside TRAC Sports Bar at about 1am on Saturday when a patron came outside and punched a man standing on the footpath.
Police immediately intervened and were dealing with the 38-year-old offender when he suddenly punched one officer three times in the head, knocking him to the ground.
The attack continued for several more seconds before the man was apprehended.
Mr McGurk said the officer suffered broken ribs, lacerations to his face and ear that required stitches and heavy bruising. He was taken to Pohlen Hospital for treatment.
The attacker was arrested and charged with assaulting the man on the footpath with intent to injure, aggravated assault of the police officer and resisting arrest.
He appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday and was released on bail to reappear in Morrinsville District Court on December 5.
The police officer was still to return to work and was recovering at home.
