Piopio residents have had to wait until today to find out why they were without water over Queen's Birthday.

Waitomo District Council staff struggled to explain a breakdown to the village's water supply on Sunday, saying they would not be able to comment publicly until Tuesday.

The King Country township on State Highway 3 is understood to have been without water since early Sunday. The award winning Fat Pigeon Cafe was closed for business because of the water breakdown.

A council contractor, who declined to give his name, said staff were working "as fast as humanly possible" to restore water but the cause of the breakdown was not yet known.

The man, who only gave his name as Grant, said he didn't know how many households and businesses were without water.

"We're doing our best to resolve the issue as we speak but that's the limit of what I can say. As a contractor I'm not able to put my name against anything the council might be liable for."

The council's duty media contact could not be reached outside business hours and would not be back at work until today, he said.
